Whitney Museum Archival Storage & Custom Refrigerated Room

Project Overview

Archival Storage & Custom Refrigerated Room
Integrity Contracting, Inc. completed the construction of a large-scale archival storage facility and custom refrigerated room at 55 Dey Street in Jersey City, New Jersey. Working in collaboration with architect Michael Fontaine of GKV Architects, the project delivered a highly specialized 12,000 square foot storage environment engineered for the preservation and organization of sensitive materials.

Insulated Panel System The refrigerated storage rooms were constructed using a full insulated metal panel system covering all walls, ceilings, and floors. The panels, finished in a bright metallic surface, create a fully sealed, temperature-controlled envelope capable of maintaining precise climate conditions. Tight panel joints and continuous linear LED lighting running along the ceiling perimeter ensure both thermal efficiency and a well-lit, functional interior.

Refrigerated Entry Doors & Access Ramp Entry into the refrigerated rooms is through large-format, heavy-duty insulated doors finished in a bold red, providing clear visual identification of the controlled environment zones. The doors are equipped with industrial-grade cam-lock hardware and multi-point latch mechanisms along the full height of each panel, ensuring an airtight seal critical for maintaining interior temperature. A diamond-plate steel access ramp spans the full width of the entry, providing a smooth, level transition between the warehouse floor and the refrigerated room threshold — accommodating equipment and cart access while maintaining the integrity of the insulated floor system.

Climate Control & Refrigeration Industrial-grade refrigeration units were mounted along the upper walls at regular intervals throughout the space, providing uniform cooling across the full length of the rooms. The system is designed to maintain consistent temperature and humidity levels critical for the long-term preservation of archival materials.

Pallet Racking & Shelving The storage areas were fitted with heavy-duty pallet racking systems featuring blue steel uprights and orange horizontal beams with wire deck shelving. The multi-tier racking maximizes vertical storage capacity across the full footprint of the space. Complementary freestanding blue shelving units along the perimeter provide additional organized storage for smaller archival items.

Flooring Two distinct flooring treatments were employed across the facility. The refrigerated rooms feature polished stainless steel floor panels, providing a seamless, hygienic surface consistent with the insulated panel system. The open warehouse storage areas feature a sealed and polished concrete floor, durable and well-suited for heavy racking loads and equipment access.

Lighting Continuous linear LED fixtures were installed throughout all spaces, providing bright, even illumination across the full depth of the storage rooms and warehouse areas — essential for safe and efficient operations within a large-scale archival facility.
